The Wonder Woman by The-Mirrorball-Man The Wonder Woman by The-Mirrorball-Man
I hate Wonder Woman's costume. I just think it's ugly. So, from time to time, I feel compelled to redesign the character. Last time, I wanted to give her a more contemporary look. the-mirrorball-man.deviantart.…

This time, I'm trying to get rid of what I think is the major flaw in Wonder Woman's so-called "classic" costume: it's just a garish collection of colors, all competing for our attention. Honestly, it's a mess. My solution to the problem here is to get rid of the blue, replacing it with a more elegant black, while using the remaining red and yellow in a more coherent fashion.

At the same time, I tried to make the character look like a post-modern Greek goddess, which is what she's supposed to be, isn't it?

:pointr: You can see other Wonder Woman redesigns in my Wonder Woman gallery.

The black would differentiate her from Superman.

I dislike the black. It looks terrible on her especially the costume. She looks like a classical hooker. You're trying too hard.

I like this a lot though I think if the black was a midnight blue(dark blue) it would be more fitting, instead of having a bright blue.

Yes, I think you may be right. I don't know. There's something about all those colors struggling for our attention that really bugs me.

While it is certainly more pleasing to the eye, and I really love the use of black (a darker and less prominent blue would probably also have worked) here. Though there are a few jarring issues;

First, there's the boots; high heels, really? They seem to be about as practical as an evening gown in a fight. Then there's the corset; not only does it have holes on the side (which I guess is an invitation to getting the corset ripped off) but the shoulder straps just sorta hang on the shoulders. Both are very sensual choices, and I honestly don't figure Diana/WonderWoman as the gal who needs to dress in a manner to draw attention.
Then there are the skirt/loincloth-tassle thingies. They just sorta dangle around being completely unnecessary and in the way. The indestructible bracers would also be jarring to see different, being historical artifacts and not just another piece of the costume.

You do however, my good man, have one redeeming factor that more or less makes up for all this... the noseguard. IT. IS. BADASS. I've see her with it once before, in Batman & Robin Allstars (a completely horrible series, by the way) and it makes her look dead 'ard. Kudos for that. :)

Oh, and all critique meant constructively, of course.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an extensive critique, Ben.

If I may tell you a little more about my approach here, this drawing really must be seen as one of several attempts at redesigning Wonder Woman costume. Here, I figured out that the lady is indestructible, can fly, is for all intents and purpose a goddess, and lives in a high-energy world of improbable super-feats, so I deliberately designed it to look cool, without any intention to make it practical. Super-heroes costumes are almost never practical, and super-heroines costumes are even worse in that respect, so we might as well go all out.

If you're interested, here's another one of my redesigns, which might appeal more to your tastes: [link]

I actually looked through all of them, and they are all technically very well drawn and fitting to the genre they are meant to be placed in.

Personally, I think with a bit tweaking, the picture I posted would be the best of them; in that it is iconic, interesting and fairly close to the original. As long - IMHO - some of the aspects are toned down a bit.

On a related note however; good job with the colour choices.

Merci!

As far as I'm concerned, the clash of bright, primary colors is one of the worst things about the original costume.

i agree with what you say. personally i can't stand the character in general. but for the point of this, people will generally argue for a similar color scheme based on the idea of of the whole red white and blue thing she likes to rock

ok maybe you would know. i have this belief that there is a good story for even bad characters. allan moore's run on supreme, or Jack Kirby's on Black Panther for example, do you know a good Wonderwoman story cause lord knows i can't find one

No, the only stories that could be considered definitive are George Perez' run in the 1980's, though in my opinion it feels very dated now, and William Moulton Marston's original WW stories in the 1940's, just because there's nothing quite like them. But no, so far, Wonder Woman hasn't had her "Dark Knight Returns", her "Kraven's Last Hunt" or her "Longbow Hunters".

okay.. firstly great concept and fantastic this is definately a proquality level art
as for a matter of opinion
i myself am not a fan of the 1 piece swimsuit of hers ..

this piece would be best for a ceremonial affair i.e a meta party wherein some dignitaries from offworld or international affliates would be attending if soldiers have dress uniforms why would a superhero don a special use attire for their formal engagements were they so social
staying inline with the ceremonial usage if not for per say a party then more for some kinda ceremonial combat setup (think spock/kirk deathmatch type event original StarTrek)

any thoughts on a full body black gold and red piece with a mid body blue section (black would seemingly allot for a loss of true hero and is typically associated for when they go bad for a lack of a better phrase (or word) its the same reason that not all cops wear a black uni or that our regular military wear black .. its a more "hardcore" theme in some visual aspect of how people could associate the costume and its colors

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such an in-depth comment. I'm really, really thankful.

I've thought about Wonder Woman's costume far more than I probably should have, and I'm really convinced that the worst thing about it is all these bright colors competing for our attention. In my first redesign, I tried to tone down the colors, but it didn't really work. In my second version (this one), I used black instead of blue, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The third redesign is much more radical: it only uses red, black and a little gold here and there. The fourth redesign is an attempt to find some kind of balance by going the other way, drawing an ultra-cheesy costume and adding white everywhere.

I'm still not satisfied. I might draw a fifth. :D

well lol i'd like to post my idea
for you to consider metaphorically start from scratch
her name is wonder woman , and shes a Grecian descent aka goddess bit
soo since its a post feminist world lets say basic full body standard suit
some kinda plasti/poly resign number (in appearance)
with black can work with the pants aspects that can have blue gold and red highlights and stripes around where
the boots start (we could for supermans sake toss in a reddish thong type aspect however i dont know or think it would work in both functionality and general appearance) or even add in this loin cloth cover you got going on in some way that might work..
the upper body could still retain a classical sense i.e no (since shes got the gauntlets), also use blue and gold and red more up here than black since like i said its more a baddie variation element and the gold breast rack can stay but be more armour form fitting not giant freaking soup cups to feed a village ..
and it could even have a lil bit of cleavage with a zipper that she moves up when in battle mode..
