Artist's Comments

I was in Vatican City last summer, and among many other things I saw this painting [link] , which is a series of scenes from the Last Judgement.

As I was looking at it, I suddenly saw myself submerged by a singular feeling of alienness: what would one feel, when looking at this painting, if they had absolutely no religious education whatsoever? How would they relate to it? How would they interpret the symbolism? Would they understand the story? Would they just be completely lost?

This deviation is my attempt at evoking a similar feeling.

this is amazing. i can't even find words.
i have little knowledge of most religions; this is just the sort of strange jumble i come up with in my head when i hear/see/read anything relating to religion...

That, my dear friend, is absolutely amazing :)

You asked: Would they just be completely lost? Well I can only speak for myself, and I am completely lost when I look at most kinds of religious art (even the Christian ones). I attribute this to a completely different mindset of the artists and the society/culture at the time when it was made. I simply share no cultural background with them. There's lots of things they took for granted at the time, which I'd have to look up to make any kind of sense out of it (this includes using symbols which don't hold any meaning for me).

So, the funny thing is, your image makes more sense to me, than a lot of religious art I've seen :D

I get the feeling I could "decipher" your image, at least get the "gist" of what you were thinking while drawing it^^. (It actually reminds me of the Bayeux tapestry^^)

But, be all of that as it may...

This work must be one of my favourite works on dA, ever!

It's one I'll be delighted to return to every now and then, to have a new and fresh look, to discover new details, to imagine new storylines...

Brilliant work, Julien!

:D

Okay...I am speechless. In college I studied religion very extensively...which you would think would prepare me for this kind of thing. lol. So far all I can decipher is, the green guy with the lightening bolt on his head is some sort of messianic figure. There seems to definelty be two different religions fighting for dominace. The wind worshipers and the fire worshipers. The green guy is definetly on the wind worshiper's side. I am also getting a crusifixtion theme as well as a resurection theme...but I am not sure if that is my cultural upbringing seeping through. What I don't get is the uprise of the ant people. It's like the world returned to chaos after the wars.

You are a true artist. I really think this piece should be studied in college art and religion classes...I might send this to one of my professors who taught my religious courses to see what he thinks, if you don't mind. :D

I can't really say anything about this that hasn't already been said. This is a fantastic concept, and a great image!

FAQ #761: How do I get more pageviews?
:icondeedee20382:
I really can't add anything to what has already been said. You ARE an Artist. You had an idea, and you have fully realized it. You got me puzzled, trying to figure out what the story could have been like.

Did you realise no one can see inside your view?

This is incredible. What a brilliant concept, and the execution is astounding in its animation, simplicity, sophistication and communicative ability. Well done!
:iconvaneckphreaking:
Superbe idée! Ça semble dé;peindre une mythologie pas mal complète et comme dans le cas des mythologies réelles, il faut un minimum d'initiation pour comprendre quoi que ce soit, avec un mélange de réel et d'imaginaire...
:iconghostpockets:
Wow awesome!
You should go back to the vatican with a print of this and surrepticiously install it amongst the other works, Banksy stylee. See how long before they notice it and if, when they do, they believe it's real and dramatically adjust their dogma to include the lightening folk and the ants and the hornheads and the skellingtons and the dancey torso man.

I met a simple blackbird, who was happy as can be, he laughed insane and he quipped "Kahlil Gibran"

"Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed."

What a wonderful idea! Good commentary, too. This is the kinda genius stuff I love to see. :+fav:

Keep up the good work! :salute:
