Artist's Comments

Not that anyone asked me to, but I just thought it would be fun to post a little tutorial based on my "Lila Rocks" deviation.

I have no formal artistic training and I basically don't know what I'm talking about, so feel free to dismiss this completely and mock my numerous flaws. It'll be fun.

It's great to get to see the process for this drawing, Julien-- for someone like me who usually goes for flat colors, seeing how you work the volume in color is particulatly interesting. Thanks for sharing, sir! :D

Thank you! I'd love it if you posted something similar, because I have absolutely no idea how you work your magic.

 Well thanks, Julien, but I'm just a photoshop bandit. What I do is very simple: Once I scan the inked drawing, I set the linework to "multiply" and below that I add new layers for every color. I usually keep changing colors until arriving at a combination that I like, and most of the times, I just leave them as flat colors. Other times I might add a bit more of detail using a tablet.

Once I have the color scheme I like, I just add one or two layers which I use as filters. These layers are scans of old yellowed pages taken from old books, or textures I do with ink and water, which kind of have a "rusty" feel to it, and I think they give the digital colors a more analogic look. The old pages are also great to get vintage effects. :)

So I set those texture layers to "multiply" as well, and that's all the process, really

I'm such a caveman when it comes to working digitally, that I try to keep my "method" as simple as possible... though when I get to have the patience to sit and practice, I'd like to try something along the lines of what you did in this tutorial, and seeing what happens...

Nice work! This is a nice tutorial, each step is explained in detail :) Lovely job!

Just a question though, you do all your work 100% digitally, no?

Superb and very enlightening. When I have my computer back, I will attempt something in this vein.

Yes, I've been drawing digitally exclusively for the last seven or eight years.
